BEETROOTS TONIGHT/BOB SINCLAR TOMORROW

Bloody Beetroots tonight at Webster Hall, and Bob Sinclar tomorrow night at Pacha. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend either, but if you're going, post some feedback!

  1. When the Bloody Beetroots started touring with MSTRKRFT back in 2008/2009 the BBR were nobodies. In fact, most people more than likely wrote them off as just some random Italian DJ duo (Bob Rifo and Tommy Tea)with an odd nom de guerre and an even odder penchant for Venom (black Spider-Man) masks that opened for MSTRKRFT because they were cheap or MSTRKRFT's booking agent couldn't find anyone better. That was until you witnessed them perform and subsequently had your face melt off. The only word that comes to mind when trying to describe a BBR concert to one of your friends is "wild". You have to respect performers who can inspire a crowd of thousands to rage harder than they have every raged before and still be partying harder on stage than said crowd.

The music of the BBR literally destroys any preconceived notion of muscal genre or classification; if you had to describe them as anything you could try to describe them as being electro but to be honest they are also very "punk-ish" and "metally". Their shows have all the grindy beats and pounding bass of an electro show plus the chaotic intensity and emotion of what you would expect at a punkrock/death metal concert, this holds especially true to their new act - "Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77". As of recent the BBR have been going in a different direction and employing live instruments at their concerts. Evidence of not only the BBR's mind blowing raw talent, but also how the electronic music scene is perpetually changing and more importantly growing at an astronomical rate.

-Yes, I said "concert" and not show. I find that there is always confusion when an electronic music lover tries to describe a dj performance to someone who is not an electro/trance/house head. For the most part djs put on "shows" not concerts, I think that this is due to the lack of instruments and all the music being pre-recording, as well as the employment of lasers, lights, fog and trippy visuals. But when you tell some one you went to a show they more than likely think you saw some sort of theatre/Broadway performance and given that it is a musical event its not a very good or at least accurate description. But I digress.

The BBR with their new Death Crew 77 act have recruited drummer Edward Grinch, given Bob (whom has now styled himself as Sir Bob "Cornelius" Rifo) a guitar as well as a couple other instruments (I'm convinced he can play every instrument on the planet at this point), embraced a new punk/death-electro sound, anarchic slogans with a dash of Nazi fashion-sense. Bob is literally running around the stage either doing the vocals , wailing on his guitar, playing the piano, and/or live mixing on the deck with Tommy Tea, all while Grinch is rocking out on the drums. When the BBR came on they instantly owned the place as if they were rock stars. You left that night covered in 2,500 other people's sweat, exhausted, hyped, speechless, and grinning over how hard you raged your face off and loved it. If you weren't there on Oct. 15 you missed out on quite possibly the best thing to come out of the electro-scene so far. The BBR aren't "working" on stage, they are partying-- they are throwing one giant rager in a completely new way.
Favorite concert/show ever... Electro was just redefined, See your yourself:

  3. You still heard a few of their better known hits like "Warp" except overhauled to fit their new Death Crew 77 act. They went on pretty late and the set however, was very short (big buzzkill). This is probably due to the still limited material the BBR have for this new act. Also lets face it, punk metal type songs are pretty short to begin with due to that you can only shred on a guitar for so long. The Death Crew is off to an amazing start, they just need to develop their act a little bit more.

    - With that being said, still, any preconceived notion about electronic music is or more importantly any argument that you could possibly have against it was just been drop kicked out the window by Death Crew 77.

If you didn't get to see them this past Friday, they just announced that they are coming back to Webster Hall for NYE doing a late night set at 3:30. Although, it will not be a Death Crew 77 concert, but instead a DJ set. Still worth it and given how late they are coming on you still have plenty of time to go see Steve Angello at Roseland Ballroom and then cab it down to Webster. Its worth it.
