stockholm2manhattan? So Much SHM for NYC!

New York City will see the ENTIRE Swedish House Mafia perform (seperately) between November and December:

October 23 - Steve Angello - Harrahs (Atlantic City, NJ)
November 13 - Sebastian Ingrosso - Pacha NYC
November 20 - Axwell - Webster Hall
December 31 - Steve Angello (with guests) - Roseland Ballroom

A year ago it was rare to find any member of the 3 in the United States as a whole, unless it was for a festival. Their collaborations with Laidback Luke, David Guetta, and Dirty South over the last two years has truly enabled them to organize themselves and solidfy their name and sound. Many don't realize how long the Swedish House Mafia has been around, or that DJ Eric Prydz was actually an original member - but after years under various aliases (Supermode, etc), SHM can claim some of the most absolute floor-filling anthems as their own. Their songs vary in sound, however each personify the genre of Swedish House perfectly. In 2009 SHM gained residency at Pacha Ibiza with the help of Mr. Guetta on Monday nights to run their weekly Dark Forest party there. This past summer, they continued residency at Pacha but renamed their party Masquerade Motel. It is difficult to discuss the group as a whole, because they each do a lot of individual work, however if they were ranked as a group SHM would surely gain at top 10 spot in this year's top100. In last year's top 100 they ranked as follows:

Axwell: 14
Angello: 20
Ingrosso: 25

I have been fortunate enough to see all of them individually and as a group - in both scenerios I highly reccommend seeing these guys, their shows are a ton of fun.

Take a look at the variance in productions of Swedish House Mafia beats;

their classical, quintessential swedish house:
Tell Me Why
Be vs Show Me Love

Leave the World Behind
How Soon is Now
watch the sunrise
sweet disposition
open your heart
their new here and now, electro sounding swedish house:
one
knas
miami2ibiza
rave n roll

If you want to get a feel for how fun these guys are, here are probably my two favorite swedish house mafia videos, one is them opening at UltraFest, the other as them doing One at Tommorrowland - both are lengthy, but worth it.

SHM Tommorrowland 2010

What's your favorite SHM production? What do you think is the reason for their sudden explosion even though they've been around for such a long time? Have you seen any member of SHM or the group as whole live? If so, where and what did you think?

  2. I think what is great about SHM is that they are not like your traditional dj duos (yes, they are a trio but you will see what I mean) in that they are capable of producing music independent of one another in order to pursue each of their own respective musical interests, and still come together and produce amazing club anthems such as "One". A year or two ago, if you saw the name Axwell, Ingrosso, or Angello it would be as you said, tied to a remix with someone like Guetta. I believe that it was after electronic music fans were able to see how many different directions the SHM could go with their music, that allowed for their popularity to rise. Electronic music a form of music that is always changing and the SHM has over the years produced a variety of different sounds that allows them to "feel" their audiences (particularly in a live setting) VERY WELL and therefore supply the crowd what it wants to hear at that given moment.
